🧳 Romantic Iceland Getaway: 4 Days Based in Reykjavík (October Itinerary for Couples)

Imagine chasing waterfalls, soaking in geothermal lagoons, and watching the Northern Lights dance above a midnight sky — all while wrapped up in Icelandic wool next to the person you love most. That’s exactly what our romantic 4-day getaway to Iceland in October was all about.

If you’re planning a short trip and want to see the best of Iceland without switching hotels every night, this Reykjavík-based itinerary hits all the highlights — with day trips to the Golden Circle, Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and the South Coast, ending with a relaxing soak at the Blue Lagoon before your flight.

Northern Lights above Iceland

🗓 Day 1 – Golden Circle: Iceland’s Greatest Hits

We kicked off the adventure with a drive through the Golden Circle — the most iconic route in Iceland. After a cozy breakfast at Sandholt Bakery, we rented a car and headed straight to Þingvellir National Park, where the earth quite literally splits between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

We stopped to see Strokkur erupt like clockwork at the Geysir geothermal area, and were totally awed by the roaring power of Gullfoss Waterfall. A stop at Friðheimar, a magical greenhouse restaurant serving tomato soup among the vines, made for the perfect lunch break. We even managed to squeeze in a short walk around the colorful Kerið Crater before heading back to Reykjavík.

🗓 Day 2 – Snæfellsnes Peninsula: Iceland in Miniature

We left early the next morning for a full-day road trip to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often called “Iceland in Miniature” because it offers a little bit of everything.

Driving through lava fields and fjords, we explored the dramatic cliffs at Arnarstapi, took windswept selfies at the iconic Kirkjufell mountain, and wandered into the otherworldly black church at Búðir. Seals were lounging on the beach at Ytri-Tunga, and we even caught a glimpse of Snæfellsjökull Glacier in the distance.

🗓 Day 3 – South Coast: Waterfalls, Black Sand, and Rainbows

Day three brought us face-to-face with two of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls. Seljalandsfoss gave us the chance to walk behind the curtain of water, while Skógafoss greeted us with a double rainbow — no joke! We climbed the steep staircase beside the falls and stood in awe of the vast view at the top.

After warming up with lunch at The Soup Company in Vík, we made our way to Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. The dramatic basalt columns and crashing Atlantic waves made this one of the most cinematic places we’ve ever been.

Romantic moment: Standing arm-in-arm as the wind whipped around us on the black sand beach, the sky streaked with moody October clouds.

🗓 Day 4 – Reykjavík Charm + Blue Lagoon Farewell

On our final morning, we slowed things down with a relaxed walk through Reykjavík’s Old Harbor and a stop at Hallgrímskirkja, the city’s iconic church. After a little last-minute souvenir shopping, we packed up and headed toward the Blue Lagoon.

There’s no better way to end a trip to Iceland than with a soak in warm, mineral-rich waters under an open sky. We enjoyed a drink at the in-lagoon bar, slathered on silica face masks, and left feeling completely refreshed for the flight home.

Romantic moment: Floating side-by-side in the steamy blue water, knowing we’d created a memory we’d never forget.
